“Jefferson” includes Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health, and Jefferson Health Plans and is principally located in the greater Philadelphia region and southern New Jersey. Through a series of integrations and mergers, Jefferson has become Philadelphia’s second largest employer ~ more than 42,000 people strong, including 3,500 employed physicians, 9,300 nurses, and over 1,500 salaried faculty. Jefferson had $9.7 billion in total revenue for fiscal year 2023, an increase of $1.8 billion from the prior year.

Thomas Jefferson University (TJU)
Dating back to 1824, today Thomas Jefferson University is comprised of 10 colleges and three schools offering 200 undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 8,300 students. The University boasts a 97% success rate among undergraduates in securing jobs or going on to graduate school. In addition to being the home of Sidney Kimmel Medical College, the University boasts an additional 5 colleges dedicated to health-related professions, including the Jefferson College of Nursing. The University is committed to providing academic pathways for graduates seeking high-demand positions and continues to demonstrate its support of interdisciplinary collaboration in patient care, education, and research through its programs.

Designated a national doctoral research university in 2017, Thomas Jefferson University has committed to continue to expand both the range and impact of Jefferson’s research enterprise over the next 5 years. The University’s strategic plan for its clinical research program (which now has more than 2,000 active grant-supported studies) includes increasing Jefferson’s support for the translation of research into real interventions, as well as elevating basic, translational, and applied research and scholarship across the University. As Jefferson continues to build transdisciplinary collaborations, it will also be launching new regional partnerships to access high-end technologies and catalyze national consortia in pursuit of targeted high-priority research goals.

Currently, there are over 1,000 active clinical trials across the Jefferson research enterprise. For FY 2022-23, Jefferson obtained $201 million in sponsored research awards. TJU researchers obtained close to $80 million in NIH funding, of which more than 95% originated from Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC)
Founded in 1824, Sidney Kimmel Medical College offers both undergraduate medical education programs and innovative joint degree programs to more than 1,000 students each year. SKMC sponsors over 100 residency and fellowship programs for its 745 residents and 200 subspecialty fellows. SKMC has 27 departments; six basic science and 21 clinical departments. This includes the new Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, the first department of its kind in academic medicine.

Jefferson University Physicians (JUP) is the multispecialty physician practice for Sidney Kimmel Medical College’s full-time faculty and currently consists of over 630 physicians in more than 33 specialties and multiple primary care practices. JUP accounts for nearly 800,000 patient visits annually across 105 practice sites throughout Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley.

Jefferson Health
As the clinical arm of Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health, has grown from a three- hospital academic medical center to a 17-hospital university health system it is today, becoming the largest health system in the Philadelphia region by total licensed beds (3,902). As the area’s largest provider, Jefferson’s network of over 50 outpatient and urgent care centers throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey saw 5.6 million outpatient patient visits.

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for 2023-2024 ranked Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals among the nation’s best in 9 of its 16 specialties: Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose & Throat, Urology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, Geriatrics, and Cancer – as part of Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, one of only three nationally ranked NCI-designated cancer centers in the greater Philadelphia region. Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals was ranked 2nd overall in the Philadelphia metro region and 3rd in the state of Pennsylvania.

In 2021, Jefferson Health became the sole owner of Jefferson Health Plans, becoming the first health system in the region to create an aligned payer-provider partnership. The health maintenance organization offers more than 392,000 members health coverage options, including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
