Description Editor-Patient Education Job Description The patient education editor develops, writes, edits, designs, and produces patient-facing information in print and other multimedia formats, including print pieces, such as short education sheets and book-length projects, as well as animated videos using animation software tools. Editor manages patient education projects in collaboration with stakeholders across the clinical enterprise. In all the work they produce, the editor practices and promotes best practices for health literacy and patient-centered care. Preferred Education, Skills and/or Experience The successful candidate will: - Have demonstrable and exceptional editing, writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Have experience creating animated or educational videos using software tools such as Vyond or other video creation platforms
- Be able to work independently and manage multiple projects involving diverse stakeholders and overlapping timelines

Computer/technology skills - Experience in both Windows and Mac platforms
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) for page layout, photo editing, and graphic design
- Experience with video creation platforms, such as Vyond and other platforms
- Experience with HTML/XML, database management, audiovisual/multimedia production, and/or mobile technologies is a plus
- Knowledge of SharePoint is a plus
- Familiarity with medical taxonomies and coding (e.g., ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm, NDC, CPT, MeSH) and clinical applications (particularly Epic) is a plus
- Background in biology or anatomy is a plus
Key Functions and Expected Performance Project Management - Identify stakeholders for patient education projects across the clinical enterprise; identify key contacts for clinical governance
- Establish clear timelines and communicate frequently with project participants
- Manage multiple, overlapping projects and meet deadlines
- Collaborate with stakeholders to achieve consensus on content, appropriate content type, and formatting and to ensure content is used by stakeholders and clinicians according to best practices for patient-centered communication
- Help oversee translations in collaboration with department program manager and Interpreter Services
- Serve on standing and ad hoc committees as needed
- Advocate continuously for patient-centeredness, health literacy, clinical and technological integration, efficient use of resources, and consistent messaging across the clinical enterprise
- Collaborate with ancillary and administrative departments as necessary (e.g., Health Information Management; Accreditations & Standards; Quality, Safety, & Risk Prevention; Compliance; Legal; Nurse Education; etc.)
- Work with stakeholders as needed to establish baselines and methodologies for measuring project outcomes; document progress and results
Writing/editing/proofreading/design/print and video production/content and asset management - Develop and write original content in collaboration with Vanderbilt clinical experts
- Write and edit documents at a reading level appropriate for the intended audience, while translating complex medical information and jargon into everyday language and incorporating best practices for health literacy
- Create and edit original patient education scripts and videos in collaboration with the team and Vanderbilt clinical experts using video creation platforms, such as Vyond or other software, while translating complex medical information and jargon into everyday language and style to create health literate videos
- Copyedit and proofread documents and video scripts and text, making sure they conform to departmental style and VUMC branding and graphic standards.
- Design and typeset documents using Adobe Creative Suite
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and intellectual property/copyright laws
- Archive content in SharePoint; upload content into E-Docs, Krames Staywell, and other databases as required; maintain complete history for each document; add metadata, including keywords, for each document as appropriate
