The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is one of the largest university hospitals in the Netherlands and the major employer in the Northeastern part of the Netherlands. It provides the highest level of medical care and is actively involved in research, education and training.
At the Department of Radiation Oncology over 270 colleagues have a permanent position (100 of which are Radiation Technologists) and clinical physicists, radiation oncologists, radiation technologists and others are being trained in a pleasant and safe environment. The department has the availability of 9 linear accelerators, two of which are positioned at a remote facility in the city of Emmen. With our highly advanced equipment and dedicated staff we are capable to deliver the highest level of oncologic services.
By the end of 2017 the department of Radiation Oncology of the UMCG will be one of the first institutes in the Netherlands to offer radiation therapy with protons in addition to the regular treatment with photons. The UMC Groningen Proton Therapy Center (GPTC) will deliver treatment to about 600 patients each year. On weekdays, it will provide care during the daytime and in the evening.
The GPTC comprises a cyclotron and two treatment units with 360° gantries, fully equipped for pencil beam scanning and optimized for image guidance and adaptive proton therapy.
Patient care, as it is provided by Radiation Technologists (including treatment preparation, dose planning, dose delivery and position verification) has been divided into focus areas. Depending on the size of the focus areas, for each area one or more senior Radiation Technologists are assigned. Senior Radiation Technologists are responsible for the quality and progress of the work that is being done within their focus areas.
Senior Radiation Technologists with a focus area, who are assigned to work at the GPTC, have proton therapy as their focus area. The focus area: proton therapy, comprises several organizational sub-divisions. We need two senior Radiation Technologists who will take up a coordinative role during the process of clinical implementation of proton therapy and thereafter.
Senior Radiation Technologists receive hierarchical and operational instructions from the Paramedic Team leader (PMT) and functional instructions from radiation-oncologists and clinical physicists. In addition to his or her specific tasks, the senior Radiation Technologist also takes up tasks of regular Radiation Technologists.
As senior Radiation Technologists you:
- drafts and implements protocols and procedures regarding proton therapy
- proposes and evaluates training schedules for new Radiation Technologists
- monitors staffing, workflow and progress within the focus area
- co-operate as regular Radiation Technologists
- signals bottlenecks within the focus area and provides solutions
- fulfills the role of an expert and contact for logistic and focus area related questions
- safeguards the quality of care within the focus area
- takes part in, or leads, workgroups and projects
What do we need
- Bachelor degree in Radiation Oncology (in the Netherlands: HBO MBRT) or comparable education (e.g., in the Netherlands a license certificate stating you are qualified to work as a Radiation Technologist) or other Radiation Technologist Diploma that has been approved by the Dutch Ministry of Health
- Attained postgraduate courses such as: coaching or effective and functional communication are preferred
- Experience in the area of proton therapy. Additional organizational or management experience in the area of proton therapy is preferred
- A positively motivated colleague who gladly accepts the challenge of making the implementation of proton therapy in Groningen successful
- Availability at flexible working hours: available for at least 32 hours per week, available for regular evening hours until 22.00h, willingness to complete occasional tasks after regular working hours
- A team player who can cooperate interdisciplinary and also work independently
- A colleague who has strong competencies, especially regarding: coaching, offering and receiving feedback, motivating others, thorough in documentation, guidance and instruction and able to handle stressful situations
- Clear in communication, both verbally and in writing. Fluent in Dutch and English or willing to rapidly achieve fluency
- Affinity with working with children
- Willingness to subscribe to a Nationwide Dutch quality register for Radiation Technologists
The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. You may be required to build up sufficient protection against Hepatitis B before you can be appointed. Vaccination is provided by the UMCG if necessary.
What do we offer
Your salary will be a maximum of € 3.339,- gross per month (scale 8), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and a development budget. In the case your current position is abroad and you have proof of management experience in the area of proton therapy, a suitable salary offer will be provided. Employment is for the period of one year. After that you will be offerd a permanent position in the case of statisfactory job fulfillment. The terms of employment are according to the Collective Agreement (CAO) for University Medical Centers in the Netherlands.
